Palm Oil in Makeup is Devastating the Planet

Palm oil is a vegetable oil extracted from fruit of oil palms and used in food to cleaning products and fuel, and mostly grown in Africa, Asia and North and South America.

It has become a symbol of all the worst things humans are doing to the planet. If you use beauty products , or own shampoo/shower gel, probably you have palm oil products.

Palm oil production is responsible for 10% of total greenhouse gas emissions and the loss of at least 100,00 Borneo orangutans as at 2017.

Beauty brands are takingaction. L’Oréal has pledged to achieve 100% traceability on the palm oil it purchases and Estée Lauder has adopted a no deforestation policy, palm oil suppliers must prove no trees are being felled. Critics say big brands aren’t going far enough.

Rainforest is being deforested at approx. 300 football pitches per hour, and only a small portion of the animals that live there can survive; many are considered pests. A UN decision-making body on climate change estimated in 2006, 1,500 orangutans were clubbed to death by plantation workers.
